Ammonia Leak: San Onofre Nuclear Plant
The City of Irvine activated its Emergency Operations Center about 3:30 p.m. today in response to a reported ammonia leak at San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant. All of the City of Irvine’s facilities are open and operating as usual. There is no danger to the public, according to the plant’s operator, Southern California Edison. Southern California Edison reported that there are no reported injuries, and the ammonia leak did not include any radioactive material. Southern California Edison has stated that no protective measures are needed by citizens. The City’s EOC was activated to its lowest level as a precautionary measure while awaiting further information. The Orange County Emergency Operations Center was activated to a Level 3 – indicating a serious incident – out of an abundance of caution.
