Press Release - Suspicious Infant Death -- ARREST
IRVINE, CA – On Monday August 1, 2005, at about 4 p.m. Irvine Police officers were summoned to the Irvine Medical Center regarding a baby brought to the hospital not breathing. Upon arrival, officers learned that a child had been brought to the hospital earlier by ambulance after being treated by Orange County Fire Authority personnel who had been summoned to an Irvine apartment on Parkview Lane relating to a medical aid call. The child was in the care of a babysitter at the time of the call.
The infant was pronounced deceased on August 1, 2005 at approximately 4:55 p.m. by hospital staff.
On August 2, 2005 a post-mortem examination was conducted on the deceased infant. Preliminarily, the cause of death appeared to be traumatic injury to the head and this matter was treated as a criminal act. The investigation, which began the afternoon of August 1st, has continued and an arrest was made on August 4, 2005 at 10:30 p.m. outside an apartment complex in Irvine.
The babysitter, SUNHYE CHOI was arrested for the death of the baby, identified as NICOLE JEONG, age 8 months, and a resident of Irvine. She was arrested without incident and was taken the Orange County Jail where she was booked for second-degree murder with a bail amount of one million dollars. A conviction for second-degree murder holds a penalty of 15 years to life in prison.
