The Great American Bake Sale
Nearly 13 million American children are at risk of hunger. To support the fight against childhood hunger, Team Kids, Inc. of Irvine is joining forces with Parade Magazine and Share Our Strength, one of the nation’s leading anti-hunger organizations, in the 3rd Annual Great American Bake Sale over the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, January 14 -16. Several thousand youth will spend their holiday weekend preparing baked goods to be sold at neighborhood sales throughout Irvine. Residents are encouraged to support this worthy cause.
“Irvine’s police and firefighters, who partner with Team Kids, will be visiting bake sale locations throughout the weekend reinforcing the organization’s goal of empowering young people to serve as advocates for their schools, communities, and most importantly, on behalf of other children in need,” said Julie Hudash, founder and Executive Director of Team Kids.
On Monday, January 16, participants will drop off their bake sale proceeds at a special reception and recognition ceremony being held at the Irvine Civic Center from 3:30-6:00 p.m. Share Our Strength Managing Director Pat Gibson, police officers, firefighters, school district representatives, and players from the UCI Men’s Soccer Team will join Team Kids at the event honoring the children’s achievements, along with reaffirming Dr. King’s legacy of making the holiday “A day ON, not a day OFF.”
The Great American Bake Sale finale will feature musical entertainment, and a tribute to Dr. King by Dr. Thomas Parham, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Counseling and Health Services at UC Irvine. Irvine Mayor Beth Krom and Irvine Police Chief Dave Maggard will also speak. Refreshments will be provided by the Corner Bakery Café, along with harmonic performances by the Vista Verde Children’s Chorus, comprised of 65 second grade students. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The Great American Bake Sale 2005, presented by PARADE magazine and Share Our Strength, and sponsored by ABC Entertainment and PAM for Baking, is a national campaign that encourages all Americans to help end childhood hunger in the United States by hosting bake sales in their communities to help the more than 13 million children at risk of hunger. All funds raised will be donated to Share Our Strength, which will then award grants to innovative nonprofits fighting childhood hunger in the United States.
