What to Do during an Extended Power Outage

Follow these safety tips in the event of a power outage. Always keep a flashlight and batteries in a place where they will be easy to find. Turn off any lights or other devices that were in use when the power went out. Be sure to leave one light on so that you will know when the power is restored. Do not start a fire to keep warm. Try to keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to help keep food cold and fresh. For more information contact Southern California Edison at 1-800-655-4555, or visit their website at www.sce.com

What to Do if Your Power Goes Out

If your power turns off in your home but neighboring homes have power then the problem may lie in your main switch, circuit breakers or fuses. Take these actions if you are in this situation: Check for the cause of the outage. Use a flashlight to carefully check to see if any lights or appliances are operating. If only several lights in your home will not turn on, turn off or unplug all lamps and appliances that are using the effected circuit. Before resetting a circuit breaker or installing a new fuse check to see if the outlet has been overloaded. Correct faulty conditions before taking further action. If you need to work on anything electrical to fix the problem remember to always turn off the power at the main switch before working on an electrical system. If you have discovered that your power outage is due to a blown fuse take the following steps: Turn off the main switch that is located near the meter or in the fuse box. Find the fuse with a blackened window or a broken metal strip inside the window. Remove the blown fuse. Replace the fuse. Be sure to replace the fuse with another fuse that has the same amperage. This is very important. Fuses and circuit breaker protect against overloads. If overloaded wires could become too hot and cause a fire. For more information, contact Southern California Edison at 1-800-655-4555, or visit their website at  www.sce.com.
