IRVINE, CA (December 19, 2013):  The holiday season is a popular time to gather and celebrate with family and friends. It is also a good time to think about the safety and well-being of others. Death and injury caused by the deadly crime of driving under the influence is entirely preventable. The Irvine Police Department urges those socializing during the holidays to designate a driver or make alternative plans for a safe ride home.

“Please, don’t let tragedy strike you or your loved ones,” said Police Chief David Maggard Jr. “Make a plan for a safe ride home. And, on behalf of the men and women of the Irvine Police Department we would like to wish those who live, work and travel through our City a safe and happy holiday season.”

On Friday, December 20, beginning at 8:00 p.m., the Irvine Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint at Jamboree Road and Birch Street, in the City of Irvine.  This checkpoint is part of our continued commitment to take intoxicated drivers off of the roadways in Irvine.   The Irvine Police Department publicizes these highly visible sobriety checkpoints to deter impaired drivers, encourage the use of sober designated drivers and to bring increased awareness to the consequences of alcohol and drug impaired driving.

The checkpoint will be clearly marked and vehicles to be checked will be selected on a pre-set basis to ensure objectivity.  Motorists will be greeted and given information on impaired driving.  Driver’s licenses will be checked and trained officers will direct impaired drivers to a secondary area for further evaluation.  Most motorists will experience little delay, if any at all.

Funding for this checkpoint is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
