Irvine Officers Support the Hands Free is Ticket Free Campaign

On Monday, April 4, 2011, and Tuesday April 5, 2011, Irvine Police Officers will be on the look out for Distracted Drivers in support of the statewide “Hands Free is Ticket Free” campaign. Irvine joins over 225 other local agencies and the CHP for this two-day, “Zero Tolerance”, approach to dangerous, distracted driving.

Inattentive drivers are one of the leading factors in traffic collisions and the use of cell phones contributes significantly to those inattention issues.

Officers will be focusing on the following California Vehicle Codes:

23123(a) - Driving while using a hand-held wireless telephone

23124(a) - Driving while using a wireless telephone (under 18)

21123.5(a) - Driving while writing, sending, or reading a text-based communication

The current minimum ticket cost is $159, with subsequent tickets costing at least $279. Is that text message or cell phone call really worth $159?
