Senior Officer Dave Gibbs Retires after 30 Years of Service in Irvine

On Tuesday, May 03, 2011, in a ceremony at City Hall, friends, colleagues, and community members gathered to celebrate a true icon in Irvine Police Department’s history.

Senior Officer Dave Gibbs began his career at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department where he worked for just over a year before joining the Irvine Police Department in 1981.

The list of his career assignments would be impressive to anyone, but more impressive are the stories told by citizens’ and coworkers about the kindness, friendship and dedication he has demonstrated, unwavering, every day of his career for nearly thirty years.  Chief Maggard shared the words from a letter he received only yesterday.  The woman described what would be one of the darkest days in her life were it not for the compassion and professionalism of Senior Officer Gibbs who helped her manage her way through the day she lost her husband of 47 years.

Gibbs, referred to as a Cop’s Cop, spent his entire career, in the field, doing what he loves, protecting his community.  One by one, his co-workers testified as to how Gibbs’ words of advice, caution, and praise, touched each of their careers and how his work ethic and love for the job inspired them to work harder and do more.

Another piece of Irvine PD history is retiring with Gibbs today, the rank he holds.  Promoted to Senior Officer in 1989, he is the last officer of that rank.

Dave’s most recent assignment was in traffic.  He was one of three Area Traffic Officers. Prior assignments include, Field Training Officer, Narcotics Detective, Special Enforcement Team member and assignment to the Regional Narcotic Suppression Program (RNSP).

During his career, Dave received many awards, including Police Officer of the Year (1997), Employee of the Quarter (1996), Meritorious Service Award (1994), Lifesaving Award (2000), Auto Theft Officer of the Year (2001), and a Community Policing Award in (2008). Dave has also represented the Department for 18 years at the Baker to Vegas Challenge Relay. His most recent, but hopefully not his last, run for the team was two weeks ago.  Fortunately, retired officers still qualify to run and his teammates are counting on him coming back next year!

Congratulations Senior Officer Dave Gibbs and enjoy your new hobby, paddle boarding!
