Special Olympics Torch Run & Tip-A-Cop 2012

On Thursday, May 31, 2012, the Irvine Police Department and neighboring agencies in Orange County participated in the annual Torch Run for the Special Olympics.  The torch run is an annual event to raise funds and awareness for the Special Olympics Summer Games being held June 9-10 at California State University, Long Beach.

The torch was received from UC Irvine Police personnel by the Irvine Police Department at the intersection of Harvard Avenue and University Drive.  Irvine police personnel took turns in carrying the torch through the City of Irvine to Harvard Avenue and Edinger where they met Tustin police personnel and handed it off.

Later that evening, Irvine officers, professional staff and explorers volunteered their time to work at three restaurants at the Irvine Spectrum.  The volunteers were paired with Special Olympians and assigned to Javier’s Cantina, Ruby’s Diner and Red Robin as wait staff to help serve food to patrons of those restaurants.  The more than $6,000 in tips collected were delivered directly to Special Olympics personnel and will directly benefit the athletes competing in Special Olympics events.
