Special Municipal Election - Council Expansion and Districting (Measure D) - March 5, 2024

At its January 10, 2023 meeting, the Irvine City Council approved commencing the district elections process and expanding the City Council from four members to six with a Mayor-at-large. On October 10, 2023, the Irvine City Council called for the holding of a Special Municipal Election on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 for the submission to the qualified voters a proposed Charter Amendment:

"Shall a City Charter amendment that (i) increases the membership of the City Council from five to seven, with the new membership comprised of a mayor and six Council members, and (ii) provides for the transition from at-large elections to by-district elections for the six Council members, with the district boundaries as described in City Council Resolution No. 23-88, be adopted?"

General Municipal Election - November 5, 2024

General Municipal Elections are held in the City of Irvine on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November of even-numbered years. Other municipal elections or special elections may be called from time to time by the City Council. 

The next General Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 for the election of the Mayor and two members of the City Council. These positions are currently elected by Irvine citizens at large and are non-partisan. The Mayor serves a term of two years, while City Councilmembers each serve a term of four years. The terms of the Councilmembers are staggered.

Section 400 of the City Charter (Term Limits)

The Mayor shall serve a term of two (2) years. Any person who serves two (2) full terms as Mayor shall not be eligible to serve again as Mayor. If a Mayor serves a partial term in excess of one (1) year, it shall be considered a full term. The term of office for a Councilmember shall be four (4) years. Any person who serves two (2) full terms as a member of the City Council shall not be eligible to serve again as a member of the City Council. If a Councilmember serves a partial term in excess of two (2) years, it shall be considered a full term.
