California’s GVRO offers family members, household members, and law enforcement a tool to temporarily remove a firearm from a loved one in crisis. A GVRO offers an opportunity for a loved one to access help and care that could stop a violent situation from occurring.  Below are the steps you can take to request a GVRO directly from the court.

Step 1: Request a Petition

Request a petition from your local Superior Court or download a petition online.

Step 2: Submit the Petition

Complete and submit to the court the petition and other necessary paperwork.

Step 3: Judge’s Initial Ruling

If the court issues a GVRO, ask a law enforcement officer to serve the order on the subject of the petition.

Step 4: Attend the Hearing

Attend the hearing scheduled by the court. The hearing will be scheduled 21 days from the day the court issues or denies the order.
