On August 10, 2021, the Irvine City Council voted unanimously to adopt a Resolution of the City Council of the City of Irvine, California, Addressing Climate Change in Irvine's Environment, Values, and Energy Sources (Irvine ACHIEVES). In this resolution, Irvine became the third city in California and the first in Orange County to adopt a carbon neutral goal by 2030.
Recognizing the existing and future threats posed by climate change, the City has taken several steps to prepare for a climate resilient future, such as completing a Local Hazard Mitigation Plan and a Strategic Energy Plan. Irvine also led the formation of the first Community Choice Energy initiative in Orange County in an effort to give consumers clean energy choices and reduce GHG emissions.
Additionally, the City is developing its first Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP). This study found that in 2019, buildings represent 33% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Irvine. To reach carbon neutrality, the City is taking steps to work with the community to develop equitable and safe strategies for building decarbonization to meet Irvine’s carbon neutrality goals.
