“Beyond the Decorative” is a collective contemporary art exhibition at Great Park Gallery. An opening reception is 1–3 p.m. Sunday, October 16. The exhibition runs through Saturday, December 31.

Before the 19th century, art served as an ornament, decorating walls and living quarters. “Beyond the Decorative” surveys how contemporary artists are redefining decorative techniques and subjects by creating new narratives relating to individuality and self-expression through the mediums of painting, photography, video, sculpture, textile design, and wallpapers.

Through the Irvine Recovery Plan – Vulnerable Populations and Small Business Assistance Grants Program, the City of Irvine provided two-year grants to local nonprofit organizations that provide services and programs to the Irvine community.

In support of Phillip K. Smith III: Shared Light, the Great Park Gallery presents a panel discussion on the function of public art in shared spaces. Completed in the Spring of 2022 in the city of West Hollywood, world-renowned artist Phillip K. Smith III’s latest public art project Parallel Perpendicular was erected. By day, the sculpture’s forms reflect the park visitors and environment as well as the surrounding West Hollywood views. By night, the mirrored surfaces become pure fields of color that slowly move through the color spectrum. Join Phillip K.
