Electric Bicycle Safety

E-Bikes are bicycles equipped with fully operable pedals and electric motors of less than 750 watts.  E-Bikes come in 3 classes: Class 1 E-Bikes are pedal assisted with motors that provide assistance up to 20 MPH.  Class 2 E-Bikes may be propelled with a throttle without use of pedals (they must still be equipped with working pedals) and have a maximum assisted speed of 20 MPH.  Class 3 E-Bikes are pedal assisted with motors that provide assistance up to 28 MPH.

E-Bikes are subject to all of the same rules and regulations as traditional bicycles.  This includes but is not limited to stopping at stop signs, riding at reasonable speeds for present conditions, and the use of helmets for riders under 18 years old.  There are some exceptions for E-Bikes, notably that riders of Class 3 E-Bikes must be at least 16 years old and must wear a helmet at any age.
