Who Can Ask for a GVRO?

Only an immediate family member or a law enforcement officer can ask the court for a Gun Violence Restraining Order.

Immediate family members include:

  • Spouse or domestic partner
  • Parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, and their spouses (including stepparents or step-grandparents)
  • Spouse’s parents, children, siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren
  • Any person who regularly lives in your house now or within the last six months

If you do not have the necessary relationship with the person you want to restrain, please call the police.
