The City of Irvine completed the construction of the Venta Spur Bicycle-Pedestrian Bridge and opened it to the public December 6, 2022. The bridge allows pedestrians and bicyclists direct, safe access across State Route 133.
The existing Venta Spur Trail is a shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists alike that extends more than three miles across the northern portion of the City from Peters Canyon Trail to Woodbury East, to Great Park Neighborhoods, and Portola High School.
Irvine Mayor Farrah N. Khan and City Councilmembers participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday, December 6, along with City officials, stakeholders, and members of the Bicycle Club of Irvine and Orange County Bicycle Coalition.
“Continuing to enhance our great City’s bike and pedestrian pathways reflects our commitment to encouraging active transportation and the continual development of our master plan,” said Mayor Farrah N. Khan. “The bridge not only enhances community health through increased exercise options, but it also increases connectivity throughout the City by creating a safer space for bicyclists and pedestrians.”
The Venta Spur Bridge is a 305-foot long, 15-foot wide bridge, and is the City’s 34th pedestrian bridge. It is the third bridge to span a freeway in addition to the 12 that span City streets and the 19 that span drainage facilities. It has a northbound elevation of 303 feet and a southbound elevation of 287 feet. Its lowest clearance over State Route 133 is 18.5 feet and at its highest point, is 24 feet to accommodate even oversize commercial vehicles. The bridge was constructed with 900 tons of concrete – a weight equivalent to ten space shuttles, and 62 tons of rebar – a weight equivalent to sixty-two liberty bells.
