City of Irvine to Host December 10 Swearing-In Ceremony for Newly Elected Councilmembers

Thursday, December 5, 2024

The community is invited to the City of Irvine’s swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected City Councilmembers Tuesday, December 10. Mayor-elect Larry Agran, Councilmember Mike Carroll, and Councilmembers-elect William Go, Melinda Liu, and James Mai will be sworn into office in the Council Chamber for their respective terms.

The evening marks a historic milestone for Irvine as the first swearing-in ceremony following Irvine’s transition to district-based elections. In March, Irvine voters approved a Charter Amendment that expanded the City Council from five to seven members and transitioned from at-large to by-district elections. The November 5 General Municipal Election was the City’s first district-based election, with Irvine voters casting ballots for a Mayor-at large and Councilmembers to represent Districts 1 through 4. The officials to be sworn-in include:

  • Larry Agran, Mayor
  • Councilmember-elect Melinda Liu, District 1
  • Councilmember-elect William Go, District 2
  • Councilmember-elect James Mai, District 3
  • Councilmember Mike Carroll, District 4

Councilmember Kathleen Treseder will continue to serve in an at-large capacity with a special election for District 5 to take place in 2025.

The City Council meeting will begin at 4 p.m., and a recess will be taken from approximately 5 to 6 p.m. for a welcome reception in the City Hall lobby. The Council meeting will resume after the reception at 6 p.m. for the swearing-in ceremony.

The event can be viewed live on ICTV, which is available on Cox Communications Channel 30, AT&T U-verse Channel 99, cityofirvine.org/ictv, and youtube.com/ictv30.
