Former City of Irvine Mayor and Councilmember Bill Vardoulis, who dedicated much of his life to public service in Irvine and Orange County, passed away September 1, 2021.
Vardoulis served on Irvine City Council from 1976 to 1984, and from 1990 to 1992. He served as Irvine’s Mayor from 1977-1979 and served on the Irvine Transportation Commission.
In addition to his service to the City, he also held leadership roles for various Orange County groups, including: President of the Irvine Chamber of Commerce and Director of the County Sanitation Districts of Orange County.
Much of his career was focused on transportation, as he actively promoted the visionary plans for toll roads, and actively pursued new ways of improving traffic in the Orange County and Riverside County areas. This dedication can be seen through his history of service on the Orange County Airport Land Use Commission, the Orange County Transportation Commission, and the Building Industry Association.
Vardoulis has received numerous accolades throughout his lifetime – most notably the Irvine Citizen of the Year Award presented by the Chamber of Commerce, and the Visionary Award presented by the Transportation Corridor Agency for his planning of the Orange County Toll Roads.
He is survived by his wife Debra.
The City of Irvine is grateful for his leadership and service to our City and community.
