The Irvine Fine Arts Center announces the opening of three winter exhibitions that highlight the link between nature and culture, and humans’ connectivity with landscape. The exhibitions run concurrently Saturday, Nov. 18-Saturday Jan. 6, and a free reception open to the public is Saturday, Nov. 18, 4-6 p.m. at the Center.

Rooted, located in the Main Gallery and Gallery 2, brings together artworks that reflect the origins of the materials used in their making and examines the link between nature and artificiality. Rooted artists Carrie Minikel, Tim Musso, Sedi Pak, Esther Traugot, Hiromi Takizawa and Elijah Wooldridge create works that highlight the role of observation in how we relate to natural phenomena.

Shelter, located in Gallery 1, features a new series of paintings by Orange County-based artist Rick Reese. It looks at how the environments we create and inhabit separate us from the natural world, posing questions about our relationship to nature and our sense of belonging to landscape. Complementing Shelter is a free Artist Talk and Drawing Session on Saturday, Dec. 9, 10 a.m.-noon. Guests 18 and older can learn about Reese’s work and draw in a group alongside the artist. The Reverberation of Causes and the Avalanches of Creation, located on The Project Wall, connects the two above exhibitions through artist Cheryl Sorg’s neon and metallic tape designs inspired by tree rings and their reference to stories of origin. Complementing the exhibition is a Tape Collage Workshop on Saturday, Dec. 2, 1- 3 p.m., where guests can make their own tape compositions in a family-friendly environment led by Sorg. Workshop is open to those 5 and older, and costs $40. Registration is required, and opens Wednesday, Nov. 15, at irvinequickreg.org.
