Irvine Exhibit Celebrates UCI Architect William Pereira

IRVINE, CA (Oct. 27, 2015): The extraordinary vision of architect William Pereira is witnessed daily by students, staff and visitors at UC Irvine. Now, his work to transform a ranch into a world-renowned university is captured in photos on display at the Great Park Gallery in Irvine.

The City of Irvine joins the celebration of UCI’s 50th anniversary with Bold and Independent, an exhibition that brings to light Pereira’s work and influence. While planning UCI, Pereira in 1963 was featured on the cover of Time magazine. In the accompanying article, he explained how designing in accordance with contours of the land, setting aside land for greenbelts, and creating walkable districts free of automobile traffic and parking lots guided his design principles. Not surprisingly, the Irvine Company was impressed with Pereira’s master planning concepts and hired him to create a master plan for the surrounding community that would become the City of Irvine.

The public is invited to the Great Park Gallery at the Palm Court Arts Complex on Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Jan. 17 to explore this free exhibit that features iconic images of UCI.
