Christina Shea Appointed Mayor

City Council adopts resolution declaring a vacancy in the office of Councilmember

Earlier today at a special City Council Meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Christina Shea was succeeded to the mayoral position of the City of Irvine, in accordance with the Irvine municipal code’s succession provisions. The mayoral vacancy was created when former Mayor Donald P. Wagner was elected to the Orange County Board of Supervisors in March.

“I am honored to be chosen to serve as Mayor of this great City,” Mayor Shea said. “I want us to be fiscally smart and forward-thinking. I am confident and inspired to lead this wonderful community and look forward to working with my colleagues on the Council to ensure Irvine remains safe and vibrant.”

The City Council also appointed Councilmember Anthony Kuo as Mayor Pro Tem.

In addition, the Irvine City Council voted to adopt a resolution declaring a vacancy in the office of Councilmember, to fill Mayor Shea’s former seat. At its April 9 meeting, the City Council will discuss next steps in the vacancy process.

Mayor Shea was first elected to the Irvine City Council in 1992. She has served five terms as a Councilwoman and two terms as Mayor in 1996 and 1998.

A public reception for Mayor Shea will be held at the Irvine Civic Center on Tuesday, April 9 at 5:30 p.m., followed by the ceremonial Oath of Office officiated by Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer at 6 p.m.
