Safe Community Task Force 2020 to Hold Next Meeting May 19

IRVINE, Calif. (January 29, 2020): The community is invited to attend the City of Irvine’s first Safe Community Task Force 2020 meeting on Tuesday, February 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Council Chamber at Irvine City Hall.

The meeting will include a Public Safety overview by Irvine Police Chief Mike Hamel and the Irvine Police Department, as well as presentations by the Orange County District Attorney and the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force.

The Safe Community Task Force 2020 was established by the City Council in September 2019 to ensure Irvine remains a safe city. It is made up of nine members from academic, business, faith-based, health, and public safety communities and is co-chaired by Mayor Christina Shea and Mayor Pro Tem Mike Carroll.

“Public safety is one of my top priorities,” Mayor Christina Shea said. “In 1992, I brought forward the idea of forming a Safe Community Task Force. We produced an extensive report with a broad range of recommendations including expanding our DARE program and the Youth Action Team. We feel the time is right to once again engage the community and professionals in order to advance new ideas focused on community safety.”

“Mayor Shea and I look forward to co-chairing this important Task Force, working with the community to ensure that Irvine remains a safe city,” Mayor Pro Tem Carroll said. “We will gather information from community stakeholders; examine incidents that have occurred in other communities; and raise awareness, and prevention efforts.”

The Task Force will meet for approximately seven months. After that time, it will present a final comprehensive report to the City Council and Irvine residents.

Meetings will be held at 6 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month in the Council Chamber located in Irvine City Hall, 1 Civic Center Plaza. Meetings are open to the public and can also be viewed on Cox Communications Channel 30, AT&T U-verse Channel 99, and online at cityofirvine.org/ictv.
