Irvine Police arrested 22-year-old Kaveh Shahriari on suspected arson after he intentionally set multiple trashcan fires in a residential neighborhood.
Yesterday, at approximately 2:35 a.m., IPD officers were called to a residence on Rembrandt, near the intersection of Jeffrey and Irvine Blvd, for a report of several trashcan fires. Upon arrival, officers discovered the contents of four residential trashcans on fire in front of the residence. The fires also caused heat damage to a silver SUV parked on the street in close proximity.
While officers were investigating the fires on Rembrandt, a resident called IPD to report he witnessed a male set another trashcan fire on Parkdale, which is less than a quarter mile from the original fires. The resident chased the male, but lost sight of him in the residential neighborhood. IPD officers set a perimeter and a drone was deployed to search for the suspect. Shahriari was located by the drone in the backyard of a residence on Wyndover and was taken into custody without incident. Click here to view drone footage.
The Orange County Fire Authority responded to extinguish the fires.
Shahriari was booked at the Orange County Jail. This case will be referred to the Orange County District Attorney’s office for prosecution.
