Celebrate Earth Day with the City of Irvine

Earth Day is April 22, and the City of Irvine invites residents and businesses to celebrate with various activities, events, and calls-to-action during the month of April and beyond.

Visit Quail Hill Community Center Saturday, April 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and enjoy a guided hike, compost demo, and interactive activities offered in partnership with Irvine Ranch Conservancy. The free Earth Day event includes guided hikes at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.; registration required on-site, limited space available. At noon, enjoy a compost demonstration.

In addition, the following opportunities invite community members to learn about nature and reduce their carbon footprint.

  • Utensils & Condiments Drive: April 1–30
    The City of Irvine is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank Orange County to collect sealed, unused takeout utensil packs and unopened condiment packets. Donations can be dropped off at the Irvine Civic Center; Great Park Visitors Center; Lakeview Senior Center; and Portola Springs and University Community Centers April 1–30.
  • Heritage Celebrates & Earth Day Workshops at Turtle Rock Nature Center: Friday, April 22, and Saturday, April 23; times vary
    Kids ages 3-12 can celebrate Earth Day through City of Irvine classes. At Heritage Community Center, kids ages 6-12 can enjoy craft time. At Turtle Rock Nature Center, children ages 3-12 can learn about nature through art and outdoor exploration. Registration is required, and availability is limited. Sign up at yourirvine.org.
  • Used Oil Filter Exchange Event: Saturday, April 30, 8 a.m.–2 p.m., O'Reilly Auto Parts 15315 Culver Drive, Suite 170 Irvine, 92604
    Exchange your used oil filter for a free replacement. Please drain your filter for at least 24 hours. One filter per person.
  • Compost Event Giveaway: Saturday, May 7, 9 a.m.–noon, Tierra Verde Industries (TVI), 8065 Marine Way, Irvine
    Swing by Tierra Verde Industries from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 7, and receive up to three free bags of compost (20 pounds per bag). Volunteers will be on-site to place the compost bags in your car at the front-entrance parking area.
  • Join the Cool City Challenge
    Volunteer for the Cool Block program to improve sustainability and quality of life in your own neighborhood and support Irvine's mission to become a carbon-neutral city by 2030. Learn more at cityofirvine.org/coolcity
  • Artwork at City Hall: On display through Friday, April 22
    Stop by Irvine City Hall to see artwork commemorating Earth Day created by Irvine-based MTO Shahmaghsoudi School of Islamic Sufism, Orange County. The five-foot tall sculpture incorporates recycled paper and plastic to convey a message about sustainability. It is available for public viewing in the lobby outside of the Council Chamber during regular businesses hours through Earth Day.
