Frank R. Bowerman Informational Meeting

Men and women standing in front of poster boards with maps of the Bowerman Landfill The City of Irvine and OC Waste & Recycling (OCWR) hosted an informational meeting about the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill on Wednesday, September 18, at Portola Springs Community Center.

The meeting offered an opportunity for the community to learn about the landfill, the strict state and federal regulations it is required to meet, and the renewable energy and resource programs it offers. It also included an update on the City’s efforts to reduce the impacts of truck traffic on City streets with the conceptual Bowerman Landfill Alternate Access road.

Bowerman Landfill Alternate Access

In collaboration with the County of Orange, the City of Irvine is working to reduce the impacts of traffic around the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill. This planning focuses on various models involving the addition of a toll road access road near the landfill. The goal is to reduce travel time and distance through the City. This will benefit residents through reduced traffic and wear on local roads, and improved air quality. One recent study showed promising results, with an average savings of over seven minutes and nearly a half-mile of travel on City streets. This also results in savings to haulers — of nearly $8 for each round trip — that could potentially benefit rate payers.
