The Irvine Animal Care Center welcomed the 10,000th animal brought in through the Third Chance for Pets program. The program transfers dogs, cats and other pets from overcrowded or underfunded California shelters – where they may have limited opportunities for adoption – and brings them to the Irvine Animal Care Center for a better chance at finding their forever home.
The 10,000th animal is a 2-year-old Siberian husky from Animal Friends of the Valleys, a rescue organization in Wildomar, Calif. He was adopted Saturday, March 11. Visitors to the Center that day also joined the Kitten and Puppy Shower on the Center’s lawn from 1-4 p.m., and "showered" new puppies and kittens with much-needed supplies and donations.
The Third Chance program was started in 1999, and has expanded to include 20 shelters from all over California. Care for animals brought to the Center through the Third Chance program is funded primarily through donations, and depends heavily on support from the community. Those interested in supporting Third Chance can do so by contributing to the Center’s Wish List, donating online, or sponsoring a kennel or annual event.
Information about adoptable pets is posted online the same day they are made available for adoption. For more information about adoptable pets or the Third Chance for Pets program, please visit cityofirvine.org/animals. The Irvine Animal Care Center is at 6443 Oak Canyon Road.
