The City of Irvine is again joining the statewide effort to improve air quality by encouraging residents, businesses, and organizations to participate in California Clean Air Day on October 5 and create new habits to clear the air for all members of California’s diverse communities.
Clean Air Day is part of an educational project of the Coalition for Clean Air. It was established in 2018 and is built on the idea that shared experiences unite people to take action to improve our community health. By joining together for a unified day of action to take the Clean Air Pledge, residents can create new habits to clear the air for all members of California’s diverse communities.
Irvine residents and organizations are invited to take the Clean Air Pledge and make a commitment to do their part through actions big and small, such as:
- Using natural all-purpose cleaners.
- Buying produce locally.
- Planting an indoor plant.
- And walking or biking to the store.
Last year, more than 1.8 million Californians completed over 3.4 million actions to clear the air. Help Irvine beat that goal in 2022 and take the pledge by October 14 at cleanairday.org/pledge. Forward your confirmation email to environmentalprograms@cityofirvine.org to receive a prize while supplies last.
“Irvine is proud to join hundreds of others across the state who are coming together to clear the air with this statewide effort and do its part to create a cleaner, healthier environment,” said Irvine Mayor Farrah N. Khan. “I encourage all our residents and businesses to support our community and take the Clean Air Pledge this year.”
The City of Irvine has long been committed to promoting environmental stewardship through alternative transportation, open space management, recycling, and energy conservation. Most recently, the City has taken several steps to identify climate impacts and prepare for a climate-resilient future, including:
- Leading the formation of the county’s first Community Choice Energy initiative, becoming the largest city to launch with a 100% renewable electricity default for customers.
- Developing a Climate Action and Adaptation Plan for the City.
- Beginning a Transit Vision Study.
- Launching electrification and discounted solar programs in the City.
Adopting Irvine ACHIEVES and becoming the first city in Orange County to commit to working toward a zero-carbon local economy by 2030.
Launching Cool Irvine — featuring the Cool Block Program — to empower residents to take climate action through neighborhood education on environmental issues. To date, 198 households are participating in the program and these Cool Block teams have taken 1,457 meaningful actions to reduce household emissions. These actions are equivalent to reducing nearly 650,000 pounds of CO2, or taking 63 cars off the road for a year.
With nearly 400 miles of on- and off-street bikeways, a comprehensive network of walking and running paths, and over 1,050 EV charging stations in the City, Irvine has made it easy for residents to use alternative methods of transportation to reduce air pollution.
