Crime Analysis

Crime Analysis is the systematic study of crime and disorder problems, as well as other police related issues including sociodemographic, spatial, and temporal factors, to assist in criminal apprehension, crime and disorder reduction, crime prevention, and department resource allocation.

The mission of the Irvine Police Department’s Crime Analysis Unit is to provide data analysis in real time to support to all levels of the Irvine Police Department in order to improve community safety and improve efficiency of police resources. 

More specifically the Crime Analysis Unit provides information to help:

  • Identify and assist in solving community concerns
  • Develop effective strategies to combat crime and ensure safety
  • Help develop tactics and educate the public on tips to prevent crime
  • Identify, locate and apprehend offenders
  • Improve safety and quality of life for all citizens
  • Optimize police resources
  • Plan for future resource allocations
  • Prioritize patrol and investigations efforts
  • Develop evidence to support prosecution of offenders

In furtherance of their mission, Irvine Police Department’s Crime Analysis Unit primarily engages in three types of crime analysis:

  • Tactical Crime Analysis: Information to assist operations personnel (patrol and investigative officers) in identifying specific and immediate crime trends, providing investigative leads, and clearing cases.
  • Strategic Crime Analysis: Information regarding long-range problems, projections of long-term increases and decreases in crime, preparation of statistical summaries, and resource acquisition and allocation studies.
  • Administrative Crime Analysis:  Information for administrative personnel regarding economic, geographic, or social factors, typically geared towards supporting planning, community relations, and funding issues.

In addition to acting as an internal resource for operations staff, administration, and other city departments, the CAU routinely fields telephone inquiries from the public requesting a variety of statistical information. The Crime Analysis Unit may be reached at:
