Meet Councilmember James Mai
District 3
James Mai is proud to be the first Vietnamese American elected to office in Irvine’s history, a milestone reflecting the diversity and progress of the city. With over two decades of business expertise, James specializes in strategy, innovation, growth, and expansion. His career spans diverse industries and international markets, earning him recognition as a global entrepreneur. As a business leader, he has successfully launched and managed organizations with worldwide reach, showcasing adaptability and resilience in dynamic environments and emerging markets.
In his role as Managing Partner of Bristol & Bates, a management consulting firm specializing in business and technology practices, James has delivered transformative results. His expertise in strategic operations, brand development, marketing, and technology has empowered organizations to scale efficiently and expand their impact. His work spans North America, Europe, and Asia, exemplifying a global portfolio.
A Cleveland, Ohio native, James pursued education both domestically and internationally. He studied at Kent State University and Purdue, later earning postgraduate degrees in Corporate Communications and Business Administration.
Beyond his professional achievements, James is deeply committed to community service. He is a passionate advocate for children’s rights, free speech, anti-discrimination efforts, and food distribution initiatives aimed at combating hunger in local communities. Over the years, he has served Orange County and Irvine in numerous leadership roles, including as a commissioner for housing and community development, a community services commissioner, and as president and chairman of multiple community-focused organizations.
His philanthropic endeavors are equally impressive. As the founder of several 501(c)(3) organizations, James has provided essential resources to underserved populations, particularly children and those with special needs. His initiatives alleviate poverty and hunger, supplying food to hundreds of families each month and raising millions of dollars to uplift communities across Irvine and Orange County.
Having moved to Irvine 26 years ago, James has lived in District 3 for over 15 years. He cherishes time with his wife and their two sons, ages 5 and 14, both of whom attend schools in the Irvine Unified School District. Together, they immerse themselves in the city’s rich cultural events and enjoy its beautiful parks and open spaces.
