The City of Irvine initially adopted its General Plan in December 1973, and the last comprehensive update occurred in 2000 with as needed General Plan amendments occurring over the ensuring years. Since 2000, the City has continued to grow and the community has matured and evolved. As Irvine matures, the focus of the General Plan objectives and policies must be reexamined to ensure that the high quality-of-life-factors that make Irvine exceptional are maintained and enhanced for residents, businesses, and visitors into the future.

Additional links to the Land Use Map, as well as Land Use Element Tables A-1, A-1-1, and A-2, which reflect the most current approved planned land use (maximum) intensity levels and acreages by City of Irvine Planning Area, are provided for ease of reference.
